ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

International Dance Theaters Festival OPEN STAGE
Mościce Art Centre

9-24 October 2015

The International Dance Theaters Festival OPEN STAGE is a  unique opportunity to catch up with the latest trends in contemporary dance and ballet. It is the only event in the entire region which, by presenting performances of acknowledged artists from the most distant corners of the world, provides a platform for a multicultural meeting. Over the years, OPEN STAGE has consolidated its interdisciplinary character. Open to other dance-related fields of art, such as photography, literature, film or visual arts, it has inspired authors and raised interest with audiences bewitched by dance. To date, OPEN STAGE hosted dance theatres from Senegal, Israel, France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland.
This year's 5th edition of OPEN STAGE will be inaugurated on 9 October with a performance titled ‘A Dance Tribute to Ping Pong' of the world renowned company Jo Strømgren Kompani from Norway. Theatre critics described the performance as "Dramatic, dark, sensual and beautiful. A performance which proves that sport can be a true philosophy." The first weekend of the festival includes also a meeting with the leading national contemporary dance theatre, namely the Polish Dance Theatre from Poznań, and an opportunity to see two new titles: ‘Volta' by Andrzej Adamczak and ‘Open Field' by Nadar Rosano, an award-winning Israeli dancer and choreographer.
On 16 October, OPEN STAGE will host talented dancers of young generation from Slovenia, that is M&N Dance Company led by Michał Rynia and Nastja Bremec. In their performance ‘Urban Tales', appreciated on various international dance festivals, they take up the matter of loneliness of individuals in large agglomerations. The next day, the festival stage will host the Lublin Dance Theatre with the performance ‘Historie, których nigdy nie opowiedzieliśmy' [Stories We Have Never Told], choreographed by Simone Sandroni from Italy.
On 20 October, we will see Aura Dance Theatre from Lithuania. AURA is one of the very few fully professional dance theatres in its home country. Artistic director Birutė Letukaitė and her dancers focus on contemporary dance and traditions close-knit with the prominent pioneers of expressive dance. So far, AURA has taken part in over 163 festivals organised in 27 countries. The company has won nearly 50 awards while the artistic director Birutė Letukaitė was distinguished in 2013 with the Golden Stage Cross. The theatre will present one of its latest premieres ‘Make the Switch from Me' that has already been awarded five most prestigious prizes from theatre critics and the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture.
The Festival will close with the show of the Grand Theatre in Warsaw and the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk titled ‘Tango Life' by Roman Komassa who managed to combine contemporary dance with tango, enriching the whole with elements of classical ballet.

Side events of this year's edition of OS include:
photo exhibition ‘New Dance' presenting young Polish dancers and choreographers who have already soaked in the Polish dance scene; choreography competition ‘SENSE OF MOVE' gathering young dance theatre artists - choreographers and dancers willing to confront their talent with experienced dance theatre mentors who will act as jurors;
dance workshops for young contemporary dancers, conducted by dancer and choreographer Ryszard Kalinowski;
Off Stage enabling niche dance theatres to present their productions.

Ambassadors of the 5th edition of the International Dance Theaters Festival OPEN STAGE are EWA WYCICHOWSKA, JACEK PRZYBYŁOWICZ and WITOLD JUREWICZ.
